The author will share his personal experiences with safeguarding birds of prey on Long Island and across the nation for 40 years. The bald eagle has served as our national bird for more than two centuries, but in the 1950s their numbers plummeted, along with those of other birds of prey, due to widespread use of environmental poisons such as DDT. Some of the efforts that ultimately halted this threat began in Suffolk County, where local community activism grew into a national campaign on behalf of endangered species and their habitats. The bald eagle?s recovery has involved people from all walks of life and shows that each of us has a role to play in protecting the natural world. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Bill Konstant, a native Long Islander from Mastic Beach, has worked for several global conservation organizations, including World Wildlife Fund, Wildlife Preservation Trust International, and Conservation International. He currently serves as an advisor to the Margot Marsh Biodiversity Foundation and the Mohamed bin Zayed Species Conservation Fund. The author of numerous popular articles, book chapters, and scientific publications, his latest writing will appear in ?Back from the Brink,? a multi-author collection of illustrated success stories of species saved from extinction (due out by Cemix Press later this year). Bill and his wife Nannette currently reside in Flourtown, Pennsylvania.Back from the Brink: Recovery of the Bald Eagle on Long Island & Beyond
