After World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jewish soldiers returned home from war looking for a life in the suburbs and synagogues to join. The Jewish population of Suffolk County increased from 5,000 in 1939 to over 85,000 by 2012. Author Ira Poliakoff, returning to his childhood home, Long Island, to research the histories of more than 250 synagogues, will discuss his findings and how synagogues and congregations have shaped Long Island past and present. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ira Poliakoff is a retired small business owner who grew up in Manhattan and Rockville Centre and attended Hofstra University. He served as youth director at the Oceanside Jewish Center, Temple Solom of Westbury, and Queensboro Hill Jewish Center in the 1960s. Ira has lived in Wynnewood, Penn., with his wife for forty years and is an active member of Temple Beth Hillel-Beth El. His book Synagogues of Long Island was published in 2017 by History Press.BOOK & BOTTLE: Synagogues of Long Island with Ira Poliakoff
