631-727-2881 Fullerton's Long Island: "The Lure of the Land" On exhibit through March 2017 The Suffolk County Historical Society cordially invites you to a never-before-seen exhibition of over 70 large-sized historic photographs of turn-of-the-century Long Island from our legendary Fullerton Collection in our Grand Staas Gallery. Featured are images of scenes from Queens and Brooklyn to Orient Point and Montauk. Also on display are vintage cameras (including glass-plate negative cameras) and other artifacts documenting the early history of photography. Gallery Hours: Wednesday - Saturday, 10:00 am - 4:30 pm Between 1890 and 1930, Fullerton created over 10,000 images of Long Island. This exhibition features over 70 large-sized historic photographs from our legendary Hal B. Fullerton Collection in our Grand Staas Gallery. Curated by Neil Scholl and Peter Dicke. Hal B. Fullerton was a talented photographer who progressively promoted agriculture and recreation on late 19th-century Long Island as a special agent for the Long Island Rail Road. Alongside his wife, Edith Loring Fullerton - author, teacher, and women's rights activist - Fullerton established experimental farms for the railroad in Wading River and Medford, in an effort to promote modern agricultural methods and the use of the railroad to move produce to New York City. In addition, he engineered a number of highly publicized media events including Charles “Mile-A-Minute” Murphy’s successful attempt to peddle a bicycle at 60 miles per hour, and President Theodore Roosevelt’s visit to the Wading River and Medford farms. Through his photographs, lectures, and writings, Fullerton’s work and vision are notable for contributing significantly to the development of Long Island. ABOUT THE CURATORS Peter Dicke, a longtime Long Island photographer and an original member of Gallery 338 in Huntington, was introduced to the craft by his grandfather and, as a teenager, developed his first black-and-white photographs with a Speedgraphic. Peter continues to develop his passion with digital photography, where his focus is on documentary and landscape images. He is an original member of Gallery 338 in Huntington.
