631-727-2881 x100 The Long Island Express: Remembering the 1938 Hurricane Exhibit curated by Jaime Karbowiak On September 21, 1938, at approximately three-thirty in the afternoon, a category 3 hurricane made landfall at Bellport. Over the next two hours, the East End of Long Island--particularly the Westhampton area--experienced the extreme wrath of a storm that is still considered the fastest, most powerful, and deadliest hurricane on record in our region. On the 80th anniversary of the Great Hurricane of 1938, also known as the Long Island Express, this exhibit will feature historic photographs, newspaper reports, personal accounts, and artifacts salvaged from the wreckage.
