ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Richard F. Welch, Ph.D., is a trustee at the Suffolk County Historical Society and the author of several books, including “General Washington’s Commando: Benjamin Tallmadge in the Revolutionary War” (2014), “An Island’s Trade: Nineteenth-Century Shipbuilding on Long Island” (1993), and “Long Island and the Great War” (2018). Dr. Welch received his Ph.D. in history from Stony Brook University and has taught American and military history at Long Island University and Farmingdale State College."
