Penny postcards, first introduced by the U.S. government in 1893, tell us much about Long Island’s past. Depicting nostalgic Long Island scenes, historic moments, and a changing Long Island landscape, the cards were sold for only pennies and sent through the U.S mail as a popular method of casual communication. Long Island historian Noel Gish will present a fascinating program and slide presentation on the history of the penny postcard, covering the history, the artwork, the technology and production, and the rise of the postcard industry at the turn of the twentieth century.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER:  Noel Gish, author of several local history books, is a retired educator who introduced one of the first high school courses on Long Island History at Hauppauge school district. He also developed a Long Island studies course for fourth graders, taught a Long Island Studies Program at Suffolk County Community College, and created a teacher training course for Nassau and Suffolk educators for infusing Long Island's history into the curriculum. He has served as trustee for the Suffolk County Historical Society and the Smithtown Historical Society, and as president of the Board of Trustees for the Vanderbilt Museum.
