The author will trace the fascinating and largely unknown history of Long Island’s iconic Big Duck, as well as eastern Long Island's duck farming industry, both the subjects of her recently published book. Long Island duck was a fixture on the menus of fine dining establishments around the world. Due to Long Island's waterfront properties, temperate climate, and sandy soil, along with modernization of the farming industry, duck production grew rapidly, and by 1940, nearly 100 duck farms were concentrated mainly between Eastport and Riverhead.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Dr. Susan Van Scoy is a professor of art history at St. Joseph’s College in Patchogue, specializing in the history of photography and site-specific art. She recalls many childhood trips out east when she was on the lookout for the Big Duck. Dr. Scoy's recently published book, The Big Duck, will be available for purchase and author signing at this event. |
